Capt. Stephen Hectus, U.S. Navy (Ret.)

Palm Desert - Capt. Stephen Hectus, U.S. Navy (Retired), 73, passed away on February 4, 2020 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease.

Stephen was born on March 21,1946 in Newburgh, NY. After graduating from Niagara University in 1967, he entered the Navy where he served as a Bombardier/Navigator aboard A-6 Intruder attack jets. After leaving active duty, he spent another 20 years serving in the Naval Reserves.

In civilian life, Stephen was a Vice-President of Sales in the packaging industry, working for such companies as International Paper, Westvaco, and other companies in the New York/New Jersey marketplace.

Stephen was a kind man who loved the good things in life: fishing, lazy days at the beach, playing billiards, good food and wine, and especially taking naps. He fiercely loved his children, Ashley and Justin, being proud of them and worried about them equally as they navigated through their lives. He adored his three granddaughters and was known as their beloved "Papa Steve".

He leaves behind his wife and constant companion of 34 years, Peg Bascom; daughter Ashley Hectus; son Justin Hectus and wife Katie; granddaughters, Jordan, Madi, and Grace; brother Joseph (Michael) Hectus; brother John (Bonnie) Hectus; brother Tom (Cheryl) Hectus: and sister, Mary (John) Brennen; and his dog Alex. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Catherine Hectus, and his dogs Emily, Benjamin, and Nikki.

Stephen will be buried at sea with full military honors. A Celebration of Life will be held at his Palm Desert home on March 8, 2020. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Parkinson's Resource Organization (www.parkinsonsresource.org) would be greatly appreciated.

Arliene Brucker of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas passed away peacefully at her beautiful lake home surrounded by her family on January 26, 2020. She was born in Milwaukee, WI on April 24, 1935 to Raymond and Harriet (Loomis) Schneidewind.

In life she defeated Parkinson’s. Arliene loved water skiing on the Colorado River, traveling the country in their motor home, boat rides on Lake Balboa, and playing cards with family and friends. She was an active member of Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her loving husband of 58 years, Richard; daughter, Maxy, husband Don; sons Ken, wife Camilyn; Alan, wife Becky; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters Gail Kelly, Nancy Fisher; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents

Glen Trulock was born to Clara and Grant Trulock on December 10, 1934. He grew up in Hendricks, Minnesota with his eight siblings. He attended Yankton High School and graduated from Concordia College in 1956. He was a Sargent in the Army and spent most of his service at Fort Hood. On December 9, 1961 Glen married Janice Elaine Yenni. During their 58 years of marriage, they had two daughters, Marceen and Cami. Glen retired from Rockwell International/Boeing after 35 years of service in Risk Management and he and Jan moved to their dream retirement town, Palm Desert, California, and lived on a golf course.

A kind, generous, meticulous and loving Christian man, Glen’s life centered around providing for his wife and daughters. He loved them dearly and would make any sacrifice for them, even the small, everyday kind of sacrifices. They spent many summers in Newport Beach, at a house on 31st Street. In the afternoon they would go to the beach and eat the lunches that he made and labeled specifically for each person. In the words of a hospice caregiver, “He was nothing short of amazing, a family man through and through.”

Every house that Glen lived in had a rose garden. He grew the most beautiful roses, including rare varieties and many others. He taught others how to prune and care for them and he loved sharing the roses with friends, families, his daughter’s schoolteachers and neighbors. His garden often had tomato vines as well. Glen was very careful to watch for the caterpillars that ate the tomatoes, when he found them, he would crush them with a clothespin.

Glen played the piano and served as a choir director at the local Presbyterian Church for many years. His family spent many Sunday mornings proudly watching him from the pews. He enjoyed going to concerts at the local theater and was a member of a Barbershop Quartet for many years. He loved that type of music, his favorite singers were Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis, Harry Belafonte, to name a few. Glen also loved to read James Patterson books. He was an avid fan of the LA Lakers was known to stay up into all hours of the night to catch the final score. He would switch back and forth between tennis matches and golf games on any given day.

In later years, Glen would send Hawaiian flowers every Valentine’s Day to his wife and both daughters. All three women would look forward to receiving them, but especially Jan, because the flowers reminded her of their many happy vacations in Hawaii. Glen loved to BBQ and made some mean margaritas. He also enjoyed his favorite scotch drink - a Rob Roy, and always asked for extra cherries.

Glen was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2000 and managed it extremely well. Such a strong man, relentless in fighting his disease. He participated in the speech therapy program at The Parkinson Voice Project in Richardson, Texas and was an active member of The Loud Crowd, a singing group of made up of people with Parkinson’s.

Glen is preceded in death by his parents, Clara & Grant Trulock; brothers, Pernie, Howard, Virgil and Carol; and sisters, Luella, Irvena, Doris and Mabel.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janice Elaine Trulock; daughters, Marceen Woods (Rusty), and Cami Bengston (Kevin); Grandchildren, Ryan Woods (Hayley), Morgan Woods, Madi Woods, Landon Bengston, Trevor Bengston, and Duncan Bengston; and his beloved dog, Corbie.

Charles Otis Cline Sr

1937-2020

Our beloved Son to Julia Kemp-Cline and Clyde Arasho Cline, husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather; passed away on January 15th, 2020 peacefully at his home with loved ones by his side due to a long struggle with Parkinson’s, Diabetes and Heart Disease.

Charles Otis Cline Sr was born in Flint Michigan, He later relocated to Newport Beach, California, where he resided the rest of his life and most knew him as the “Newport Cowboy” because he never wore flip flops and always had on boots and a cowboy hat but he loved the ocean. Dad resided off Placentia Ave for 60+ years.

Later in life, he married Ip pun Cline on February 27th, 1988.

He ranked as an SSG as a Master Crew member; wings as UH-1H (Huey) mechanic in the Army. He served overseas in Germany in the 1950s and served twenty-three years in the Army, retiring in 1996. As a father, he served side by side in the Army with his son Charles Otis Cline Jr in the 336 ANV CO located in Los Alamitos, CA from 1986 to 1989. To the present, his Army legacy has continued through his son and grandchildren.

His career outside of the Army was with McDonald Douglas, where he worked as an electrician, building airplanes and continued to keep family close, working side by side with his Nephew, Travis Heil. He retired from Boeing after approximately thirty years of service. The Army prepared him well to live life to the fullest.

He is a well-respected member in the LDS church, Newport Beach ward…His loved ones gave him happiness. He always enjoyed time with his children, thirteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren whenever possible, he loved taking small ventures in life to grab something delightful to eat; spaghetti or a quick burger. Stopping at the local barber's was a routine he never broke; high and tight as they say. A quick haircut at the local barbers and a drive down the coast brought him great joy.

Charles Otis Cline Sr was quick to accept and love others as his family without judgment as well as to offer his help wherever needed. A man who loved beauty, always stopping to say hello or give another a compliment will be greatly missed. Charles Otis Cline Sr is very much loved and respected as a husband, father, and grandfather as well as a friend to many in his life, within the community and church.

Murray Allen Morguelan, 80, beloved husband of Geri (Shapira) Morguelan, died peacefully on January 8, 2020 in Los Angeles. Murray, Fred and Barbara were the three children born to Jacob and Sara Morguelan of Louisville, where they were members of the vibrant Jewish community. Murray had several careers, including being a talented interior designer and founder of the prominent Designer's Eye Studio in Louisville. Murray and Geri eventually moved to Southern California to join family members. Murray was the father of Gariann (Larry) Weisenberg and Natalie Lavine; grandfather to Jamie and Daniel Weisenberg, and Jacob Lavine; brother to Fred and Barbara (Katz) Morguelan; and uncle to Carl (Marla) Katz, Gary (Teresa) Katz, Robyn (Stu) Young, Adina (Shareena) Ascher, Ari (Jo) Morguelan, and Abigail (Matthew) Mirkin and their many children. Murray Morguelan, we love you to the moon and back! - Your family

La Donna Jean Taylor, age 78, passed away on January 5, 2020, at Golden Heart Home Care in Cathedral City, CA. She was born in Los Angeles on October 23, 1941. She graduated from Eagle Rock High School in 1959, received a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish from Pasadena College in 1972, and a Degree in Education at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1975. Much of her adult life was spent living in Palm Desert.

La Donna took delight in helping others, and that was reflected in her choice of career. She taught at several elementary schools in the Desert Sands Unified School District for a total of nearly 30 years, retiring in 2007. In 1990 she was named Teacher of the Year at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Palm Desert. She enjoyed reading (especially her Billy Graham daily devotional), listening to and singing music, writing letters, and researching ancestry.

La Donna lovingly cared for her parents in their failing health and remained steadfast in her Christian faith despite her own health issues. She stated: "Our lives are in His will, and we will only be happy if we acknowledge that."

La Donna is survived by her brother, Jay Taylor of Quebec, Canada; nephew, Dan (Jenn) Taylor of Zeeland, MI; niece, Melissa Taylor of Holland, MI; and brother-in-law, Bob Kellogg of Greeneville, TN. Preceded in death were her parents, Jolly and Inez Loraine Taylor; sisters, Beverly Taylor and Barbara Kellogg; and brother, Stephen Taylor.

Diane, the eldest child of Cosby and Florence Cottrell, was born in Los Angeles, California. Diane and her younger brother Mel grew up on the Cottrell Avocado and Christmas Ranch located in La Puente, California. As children, they enjoyed riding horses, tending fruit trees and living a country lifestyle. Diane's father, Crosby M. Cottrell, was an Executive for Fairchild Aerial Surveys and her mother, Florence Elizabeth, was a full time wife, mother and managed the day-to-day operations of the ranch.

After graduating from the University of Redlands, she met her future husband, Don Tomkins, a star of the Occidental College football team. They married in 1961 and started their life together in an apartment in Rosemead, before moving to their dream home on the 9th hole of the Glendora Country Club. They both enjoyed golf and socializing at the Club.

Diane and Don also shared a passion for hunting and fishing and ventured to the farthest reaches of Africa, the Arctic tip of Alaska, and everywhere in between! They were active members in the LA chapter of Safari Club International, an organization dedicated to protecting the freedom to hunt while promoting wildlife conservation worldwide. They especially loved their trips to the 'Save Conservancy', an 800,000 acre privately owned wildlife preserve, founded by Roger Whittall in Humani, Zimbabwe.

When they weren't traveling, Diane pursued her passion for teaching children (grades 2-4), a career she enjoyed for over 40 years! With Del Docterman, also a Coolidge 4th grade teacher, they developed a teaching strategy that allowed each teacher "to teach to their strengths". After retiring, Diane returned for many years to teach Art Classes, especially "Van Gogh Sunflowers". Her Students loved her!

Diane loved holidays and was an avid collector of decorations of all sorts, especially Annalee's. She delighted in whimsical displays and looked forward to opportunities to share with others. Diane was a dedicated member of the Glenkirk Church in Glendora and could always be counted on to create special decor for church luncheons.

Diane was an Educator, a collector and a worldwide traveler. She had lots of friends, but her longest and closest friend was Josette Temple who she met in the 2nd Grade. In their retirement they enjoyed outings to the Performing Arts Centre at Citrus College and rarely missed a show!

In 2005, DIane lost Don. It was an especially difficult time for Diane, because she was in the early stages of Parkinson's Disease. Her brother Mel and sister-in-law Jan lived nearby and played a big role in her ability to maintain her independence for as long as possible. THey continued to look out for her for the rest of her life.

In 2016, it became impossible for Diane to continue to live independently, so she moved to Atria Senior Living in San Dimas where she was able to enjoy socializing in a safer environment. As the disease progressed and Diane needed full time care, she moved to La Posada in San Dimas in November 2018. She lived there until she passed away peacefully on January 2, 2020.

Diane was kind and generous, worked hard and believed in helping others. She was fortunate to marry her soul-mate, and together they were able to see and experience places and things that most people only dream about. She now rests in peace, leaving all of us with the memories we have of her and her life, a life well-lived.

Sharon Riff Ackerman, age 69, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2020, surrounded by the love of her family after bravely battling Parkinson’s Disease for 15 years.

She was born September 28, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York to Pauline and George Riff. She had two children with her former spouse Dr. Paul L. Ackerman.

Sharon graduated from Brooklyn College with her Master’s Degree in Education. She was a teacher for several years. She primarily dedicated her time to raising her sons.

Sharon moved to South Florida to be with her Mother Pauline and Sister Ellen.

 She led a life of care and positive spirit to anyone who she met. Her life revolved around her family and friends. She loved spending time with her sons. Every weekend she visited her son’s house for dinner and enjoyed watching her grandchildren play and grow.

Sharon loved her grandchildren and often brought them bubbles, coloring books, and educational toys every week. She was a mentor to her daughter-in-law. She was most proud of her children’s accomplishments.

Sharon in peace will join her Mother and Father, Pauline and George Riff.

Sharon is survived by her loving son George and his wife Grether, loving son Andrew, sister Ellen, and spouse Debbie, and their son Adam and his wife Stacey; dear friend Judy, Cousin Susan and her husband Russ, as well as cousins, Erica, Gale, and Matthew; her in-laws Joaquina and Elizabeth; plus her 3 loving grandchildren Brooke, Joshua, and Eli, as well as her great-niece Peri. All of these she touched deeply.

Richard "Dick" Kohn, age 89, passed away on December 30, 2019. Preceded in death by his parents, George and Olga Kohn; brother, Ervin (Gertrude) Kohn and son, Randall Kohn. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Kohn; daughter, Robyn (Bob) Canvasser, daughter-in-law, Reesa Kohn; grandchildren, Jack and Ben Canvasser and Joshua, Jordyn and Ryan Kohn; brother-in-law, Matthew (Roz Travis) Koch; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A special thanks to all of Richard's devoted caregivers especially Sherry Bowman and Willie Ross. Richard was a graduate of The Ohio State University and the OSU Law School.

He was a member of Columbus and the Ohio State Bar Associations, past President of the Tau Epsilon Rho Legal Fraternity and a lifetime member of B'nai Brith and Jewish War Veterans.

He was a lifetime member and past President of Beth Jacob Congregation, past Vice President of Columbus Torah Academy and served on the boards of Wexner Heritage Village and Jewish Columbus. He was the recipient of the Shofar Award and the Parness Award from Beth Jacob.

Federico Torres Fernández, 84, of Palm Desert and México died in Palm Desert, CA on December 22, 2019. Federico was born to Benita Torres and Gregorio Fernández in El Centro (San Juan), Jerez, Zacatecas, México on March 2, 1935, although his official birthday is listed as April 8, 1935. Federico was proud of working as a "palmero" in the Coachella Valley for over 50 years - very hard but honest work that allowed him to support and sustain his family. He was a hard-working and proud Mexican immigrant to this country who dedicated his life to respectfully helping every person with whom he interacted. He treasured his family and instilled in them his incredible work ethic and love for education. One of his favorite childhood memories was placing first in an area-wide school competition in 4th grade; his greatest regret was being too poor to continue his schooling. In his final days, he expressed joy in knowing that all his children graduated from college, and felt pride that these included some of the most prestigious universities in the world, including U.C. Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, and Harvard. Most of all, however, he was content that his sons and daughters were all happy and successful. These last five years he endured with silent strength and grace the ravages of Parkinson's. With the daily assistance and loving care of his wife, five children, and his on-call son-in-law (Dr. Chris), he continued to enjoy life to its fullest and he spent as much time as possible with his five grandchildren. A quiet, honest, and hard-working family man of intrinsic integrity, he is now and always will be greatly missed by those of us who had the good fortune to spend time with him, even if it meant watching him consistently beat you while playing his two favorite games: dominos and conquián.

Federico was a much beloved son, brother, husband, father and "Tata." He is survived by his wife, Josefa Cabrera Fernández; his children and their spouses: Salvador Fernández & Jennifer Eich (Los Angeles), Griselda Fernández & Rafael Barboza (Indio), Maricela Fernández & Christopher Flores (Rancho Mirage), Federico & Ellen Fernández (Richmond), and Adrian Fernández & Marci Furutani (Mill Valley); his grandchildren: Rebeca, Gabriel, Freddy, Raidan and Emily; and his siblings: Jorge Fernández (Cathedral City), María Gilberta Fernández (Mexico), Lorenzo Fernández (Arizona), Hijinio Fernández (Mexico), Benigna Miranda (Los Angeles), and Pio Fernández (Los Angeles).

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gregorio Fernández (1968) and Benita Torres Fernández (2006); and his siblings: Froylán Fernández (2001); Trinidad Fernández (1986); and Abdon Fernández (2013).

All services will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palm Desert.Visitation will be held at 11:00 am with a rosary following at 12:15 pm and funeral mass at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Coachella Valley Cemetery.

En memoria de Federico Torres Fernández. Federico Torres Fernández, a los 84 años, de Palm Desert y México murió en Palm Desert, CA el 22 de diciembre de 2019. Federico, hijo de Benita Torres y Gregorio Fernández, nació en el Centro (San Juan), Jerez, Zacatecas, México, el 2 de marzo de 1935, aunque su cumpleaños está registrado oficialmente como el 8 de abril de 1935. Federico estaba orgulloso de trabajar como "palmero" en el Valle de Coachella por más de 50 años, un trabajo muy duro, pero honesto. Era un inmigrante mexicano orgulloso de trabajar en este país, quien dedicó su vida a apoyar y ayudar a todos aquellos con quienes él se comunicaba. Federico siempre valoró mucho a su familia y más que nada les enseñó y dejó a sus cinco hijos su increíble ética de trabajo y amor por la educación. Uno de sus recuerdos favoritos de su niñez fue salir primero en una competencia escolar regional cuando estaba en cuarto grado de la primaria. De hecho, durante mucho años nos contaba su remordimiento de crecer pobre y no poder continuar sus estudios. En sus últimos días, expresó su alegría y orgullo al saber que todos sus hijos se graduaron de unas de las universidades más prestigiosas del mundo, incluyendo U.C. Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford y Harvard. Más que nada, expresó su alegría de que todos tuvieron éxito y se encontraban muy felices. Estos últimos cinco años soportó valientemente los efectos físicos causados por Parkinson's. Con la ayuda diaria y amorosa de su esposa, cinco hijos y su yerno doctor (Dr. Chris), continuó disfrutando de la vida al máximo y pasó el máximo tiempo que pudo con sus cinco nietos. Todos los servicios se llevarán a cabo el jueves, 2 de enero de 2020 en la Iglesia Católica del Sagrado Corazón en Palm Desert. Las visitas se harán empezando a las 11:00 a.m. con el Rosario a las 12:15 p.m. y la Misa del funeral a la 1:00 p.m. El entierro seguirá inmediatamente en el cementerio de Coachella Valley.
