Parkinson's Awareness Month 2023
Category:WHAT IS PARKINSON'S AWARENESS MONTH?
Parkinson's Awareness Month is a global opportunity to increase awareness about the condition and its symptoms, as well as to educate communities about the resources available to them. World Parkinson's Day is celebrated on April 11th, and began in 1997 -- it commemorates the birthdate of Dr. James Parkinson, who first identified Parkinson's about 200 years ago.
Every year, 100,000+ people are newly diagnosed in the United States -- the condition touches people of every age, race, gender, socioeconomic, and cultural background. Parkinson's Resource Organization works to ensure NO ONE is isolated because of Parkinson's. That includes people with Parkinson's, caregivers, and family members; we provide emotional support groups, practical resources, one-on-one consultations, education, and so much more. Learn more about Parkinson's Resource Organization programs at this link.
WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS MONTH?
We currently have four events planned to celebrate Parkinson's Awareness Month, raise awareness, grow our incredible community, and raise money to support the FREE programs we offer to people with Parkinson's and their caregivers. You can join us at these events, become a sponsor, or simply spread the word by posting about us on your social media accounts, like Facebook and Instagram!
Drag Bingo - Saturday, April 1st
Join us at The Barracks Bar in Cathedral City, CA on Saturday, April 1st, from 3-5 PM for a raunchy good time playing bingo, hosted by the extraordinary Burna Cross! The event is free to attend, but bring some cash to buy yourself a few bingo cards (and hopefully win some prizes). A portion of the proceeds go to Parkinson's Resource Organization to support our free programs for people with Parkinson's and their caregivers.
The ABC's of Parkinson's Disease with Cal Retired Teachers Association - Thursday, April 14th
Join PRO President Jo Rosen for an enlightening presentation on the ABC's of Parkinson's Disease on Thursday, April 14th, at 1 PM. Hosted by the California Retired Teachers Association, this event will take place at the Joshua Tree Community Center in Joshua Tree, California (6171 Sunburst St, Joshua Tree, CA). Learn from the expert -- Jo has been working with the Parkinson's community for over 30 years. In fact, she started Parkinson's Resource Organization in 1990 because both her mother and her husband were diagnosed with Parkinson's. She couldn't find the support she was looking for, so she created it herself!
PRO on the Move - Saturday, April 22nd
We talk a lot about the importance of movement in combating symptoms of Parkinson's. That's why we're excited to announce the Second Annual PRO on the Move 'Walk, Ride, and Roll' event! Teams across the country will compete to fundraise while designing their own method of movement -- last year we had walkers, golfers, and window shoppers...To create your own team, you just need to gather a few friends, register your team, and spread the word! Learn more about how to build your team HERE.
